Spotting Between Periods
A woman’s body is very complicated and every woman has a different physiology. This makes it very hard to generally diagnose a woman’s symptoms without checking her medical background. In this sense, spotting between periods can be interpreted differently depending on the woman’s menstrual cycle and condition. Spotting between periods can either be normal or abnormal depending on whether the woman is pregnant or experiencing menopause.
Generally, spotting between periods is a normal phenomenon especially if it occurs several days before or after the menstrual cycle. It is very common for women to experience spotting between periods after a menstrual cycle. Spotting between periods also occur during the time when a woman is in her ovulation period. This is the period wherein a woman is most fertile and has a high risk of getting pregnant. Spotting between periods happens because there is a sudden drop in estrogen level as the ovaries releases the eggs, travels into the fallopian tube and implants into the uterus, making the woman very much prone to pregnancy. During this time of spotting between periods, it is also normal for women to experience some cramping and nausea. This should be no cause for concern unless the cramping pain has become unbearable.
Spotting between periods is normally just a few droplets of pinkish discharge seen in the underwear or toilet paper. Some women who experience spotting between periods have a slightly heavier flow which would require them to use an everyday pad. However, spotting between periods should not be as heavy as the flow experienced during the actual menstrual cycle.
Spotting between periods can also be a sign of pregnancy. Spotting between periods happens because the fertilized egg turns into a fetus and attaches itself to the woman’s uterine wall to acquire support and nourishment. Spotting between periods should be interpreted as normal except if the flow becomes really heavy and occurs during pregnancy. Heavy bleeding may be a sign of a miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy or molar pregnancy.
Women who have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS also frequently experience spotting between periods because of their abnormal menstrual cycle and hormonal imbalances. In fact, spotting between periods is a very common occurrence for them and it is often hard to monitor their menstrual cycle because of its irregularity.
As spotting between periods is a sign of pregnancy, on the contrary spotting between periods could also be a sign that a woman is approaching menopause. Women could experience either excessive vaginal bleeding or spotting during this time. Women undergoing hormone replacement therapy may experience various types and flow of bleeding but once they have passed this period, spotting between periods will no longer be a cause of concern because the woman will no longer experience any monthly menstruation.
If for any reason that the spotting between periods are causing other symptoms such as unbearable cramping pain, nausea, vomiting and other uncomfortable feeling, seek the help of a medical doctor or a gynecologist. Make sure to take note of the times when the spotting between periods have occurred and its frequency so that the doctor can make a better diagnosis.
Women’s Wellness: Bleeding between Periods
Menstruation is the time when the vagina bleeds. It is a normal physiological process inside every woman’s reproductive system at the onset of puberty all throughout middle age; except when bleeding between periods. Menstruation helps produce women’s hormones, keep women healthy and prepares women for pregnancy.

The menstruation period usually lasts for about 2-7 days. After the last day of every period, the reproductive system undergoes a menstrual cycle, which usually occurs at an average of 28 days from the 1st day of the last period to the 1st day of the next period.
On a regular basis, women will experience having periods monthly. However, there are some who experience irregular vaginal bleeding or bleeding between periods. Bleeding between periods usually occur 10-16 days after the last menstruation period. There are two types of bleeding between periods:
• Intermenstrual bleeding or the definite bleeding between periods. This usually happens in the middle of 2 menstruation periods.
• Metrorrhagia or heavy irregular bleeding that doesn’t have a pattern.
Bleeding between periods can be attributed to a lot of factors, both physiological and psychological, such as:
• Cancers like cervical and uterine cancer that have reached the malignant stages can cause bleeding between periods, especially when undiagnosed.
• Gynaecological procedures such as recent abortion operations and insertion of medical vaginal devices (IUDs) may also cause bleeding between periods.
• Missing, starting and stopping hormonal contraceptives result to hormonal fluctuations that can lead to bleeding between periods.
• Hormonal irregularities like abnormally low thyroid hormone levels can cause bleeding between periods.
• Miscarriages/Pregnancy – Bleeding at any stage of pregnancy is not normal.
• Bleeding between periods is also normally present in patients diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome.
• Sexually-transmitted diseases and other vaginal infections can cause bleeding between periods.
• During ovulation, bleeding between periods can manifest through spotting. This is usually normal.
• Stress is a major factor that can cause many illnesses. Fatigue can lower hormonal levels which in turn can result to heavy bleeding between periods.
• Bleeding between periods can be caused by the formation of uterine fibroids or non-cancerous tumors in the uterine muscle.
• Vaginal injury or trauma caused by engaging in rough sex can also result to bleeding between periods.
When bleeding between periods, bed rest is usually recommended particularly when the bleeding is heavy because painful cramping of the abdomen, back or thighs is common. Pain relievers are also recommended if the woman is bleeding between periods because of the pain. However, not all pain-relieving drugs can be used to suppress the symptoms. Aspirin is prohibited because the bleeding between periods can be aggravated. Bleeding between periods is an abnormal manifestation that should not be taken lightly because it can lead to serious health issues. Bed rest is not enough for some cases. The cure to the symptoms should not be initiated just by anyone because the control and prevention of the bleeding vary. It normally depends on the root cause. Although some causes of bleeding between periods appear normal for most cases, it is still recommended to seek medical assistance, especially if the bleeding is heavy or if the woman is pregnant.

Bleeding Between Periods
A woman has episodes of bleeding which are in duration or amount and occur unpredictably. It is inconvenient, disturbing and produces anxiety. She should see her doctor who will examine her and must perform a diagnostic curettage or a hysteroscopy, usually at a time when the woman is not bleeding, so that the most information is obtained.
This is important as in some cases the irregular bleeding between periods or spotting between periods is caused by a cancer of the lining of the womb. If the curettage shows that there is a cancer treatment is for the doctor to perform a hysterectomy. If there is no cancer the woman may choose one of the treatments mentioned in the previous section. Which treatment is best for the woman can only be decided after a full discussion between the woman and her gynecologist, who has spoken with the family doctor, as he knows her family circumstances, which may be important in making decision
